Cheltenham races The Cheltenham Festival is the undoubted highlight of the National Hunt calendar, this year featuring 26 races - including the four championship races, the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and World Hurdle - over five days between Tuesday, 16th March and Friday, 18th March. Cheltenham Gold Cup The "Blue Riband" of National Hunt racing, the Cheltenham Gold Cup is run over 3 miles 2½ furlongs, with 22 fences to be jumped and represents the definitive test for staying chasers. This year`s renewal promises a mouth watering clash between Kauto Star - the winner in 2007 and 2009 and seeking to join the likes of Golden Miller, Arkle and Best Mate as a three-time winner - and Denman, his 7-length conqueror in 2008. Both horses are, of course, trained by champion trainer, Paul Nicholls, with Ruby Walsh taking the ride on Kauto Star, as usual and Tony McCoy aboard Denman. Kauto Star is understandably the better fancied of the two, having swept clear to win the King George VI Chase at Kempton by a distance over Christmas, while Denman is on a retrieval mission after unseating Tony McCoy in the Aon Chase at Newbury recently, where he started at odds of 1/6. Champion Hurdle One of the horses disputing favouritism for the Champion Hurdle, the previously unbeaten Zaynar, trained by Nicky Henderson, was recently turned over at 1/14, which resulted in the shortening of the odds of two other leading fancies, Solwhit and Go Native. Go Native, trained in Co. Meath by Noel Meade, is particularly interesting insofar as he has already won two Grade One contests, the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle and the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton Park, for which he is chasing a £1 million bonus. Go Native was a winner at last year`s Cheltenham Festival, where he edged out another probable Champion Hurdle runner, Medermit, in the Supreme Novices` Hurdle. Medermit, himself, was a convincing winner from the reigning Champion Hurdler, Punjabi, at Haydock Park recently, so the form looks strong. Nigel Twiston-Davies` Khyber Kim is also chasing a £20,000 bonus for his win in the Boylesports.com International Hurdle at Prestbury Park in December, form which entitles him to utmost respect. Queen Mother Champion Chase Another Paul Nicholls` inmate, Master Minded, attempts to become the first horse since Badsworth Boy in the Eighties to complete a hat-trick in the Queen Mother Champion Chase and is odds-on to do so. Master minded returned from a spell on the sidelines with an easy win the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury recently and should take all the beating if on-song. That said, Twist Magic, an impressive winner of the Grade One Tingle Creek Chase and Victor Chandler Chase already this year, should offer stiff opposition to the favourite, as should Kalahari King, the winner of the Blue Square Chase at Doncaster on his seasonal reappearance. World Hurdle The World Hurdle, previously known as the Stayers` Hurdle, features another red-hot favourite in Paul Nicholl`s Big Buck`s, who is long odds-on after 6 wins from 6 starts, including in this race last year, since reverting to hurdles in November, 2008. He, along with Kauto Star and Master Minded, is likely to feature and any list of horse racing tips for this year`s Cheltenham Festival, because it is difficult to see beyond any of them.
