Texas hold 'em is the worlds most popular poker game and is also commonly known as holdem or hold'em and is a variation of
the standard card game of poker. The game basically consists of two cards being dealt face down to each poker player and then
five community cards being placed down by the poker table dealer. The poker dealer will place a series of three cards known as
‘the flop’ then two additional cards, being ‘the turn’ and ‘the river’. Poker players have the option to check, bet or fold after each
deal i.e. betting may occur prior to the flop, "on the flop," "on the turn," and "on the river."
Texas Hold ‘Em Poker - The Game Objective
In Texas hold 'em, like all variants of the poker game itself, individuals compete for an amount of money placed / betted by the
players themselves. The amount of chips / cash placed on to the poker table by the poker players is called ‘the pot’. Because the
poker cards are dealt completely randomly and outside the control of the poker players at the table, each player attempts to
control the amount of money in the pot based on the hand that the player holds. The texas hold ’em game is divided into a series
of hands or deals and at the conclusion of each hand, the total pot amount is awarded to one or more of the poker players A
poker players hand may end at the showdown, in which case the remaining players compare their hands and the highest hand is
awarded the poker table pot amount. The highest poker hand is usually held by one player but can be held by more in the case
of a tie! The other possibility for the conclusion of a hand is when all but one player have folded and have thereby abandoned
any claim to the pot, in which case the pot is awarded to the player who has not folded their cards. The objective of the winning
player is not to simply win every individual poker hand, but rather to make mathematically correct decisions regarding when and
how much to bet, raise, call or fold. By making these decisions, a winning poker player will maximize their long-term winnings by
maximizing their expected gain on each round of poker betting.
Texas Hold Em Poker - The Betting Structures
Texas Hold 'em Poker is played using small and big blind bets - forced bets by two poker players. Antes are the forced
contributions by all poker players and may be used in addition to blinds particularly in later stages of the game / tournament play.
A dealer button is used to basically represent the player that is in the dealer position; the dealer button will rotate clockwise after
each hand is played, changing the position of the dealer and also the blinds. The small blind is posted by the player to the left of
the dealer and is normally equal to half of the big blind. The big blind, posted by the player to the left of the small blind, is equal to
the minimum table bet. In tournament poker, the blind/ante structure will periodically increase as the poker tournament progresses
When only two poker players remain, special head-to-head rules are enforced and the blinds are posted differently. In this case,
the person with the dealer button posts the small blind, while their opponent places the big blind. The dealer will act first before
the flop. After the flop, the dealer will act last and will continue to do so for the remainder of the poker hand. The three most
common variations of Texas hold 'em poker are limit hold 'em poker, no-limit hold 'em poker and pot-limit hold 'em poker. In limit
hold 'em, bets and raises during the first two rounds of betting must be equal to the big blind; this amount is called the small bet.
In the next two rounds of poker betting, bets and raises must be equal to twice the table big blind; this amount is known as the big
bet. In no-limit hold 'em poker players may bet or raise any amount over the minimum raise up to all of the chips the player has at
the table known as an all-in bet. The minimum raise is equal to the big blind. If someone wishes to re-raise, they must raise at
least the amount of the previous raise. If a raise or re-raise is all-in and does not equal the size of the previous raise, the initial
raiser can not re-raise again. This only matters of course if there was a call before the re-raise. In pot- limit hold 'em, the maximum
raise is the current size of the pot including the amount needed to call.
Texas Hold Em Poker - The Play Of The Hand
Poker play begins with each poker player being dealt two cards face down, with the poker player in the small blind receiving the
first card and the player in the dealer button seat receiving the last poker card dealt. As with most poker games, the card deck is
a standard 52-card deck with no jokers contained within. These cards are the poker player's pocket cards. These are the only
cards that each poker player will receive individually, and they will only be possibly revealed at the showdown, making Texas hold
em indeed a closed poker game. The hand begins with a pre-flop betting round, beginning with the player to the left of the big
blind or the player at the left of the dealer, if no blinds are used and will continue clockwise. A round of betting will continue until
every player has folded, put in all of their chips, or matched the amount put in by all other active poker players at the poker table.
Binds are considered to be live in the poker pre-flop betting round, meaning that they contribute to the amount that the blind
player must contribute, and that, if all poker players call around to the player in the big blind position, that player may either check
or raise.
